Last week the USE supported Cycle Shack CX team travelled over to Round 2 of the National Trophy in Leicester. Having picked up a couple of podium results in 1st round at Newcastle the guys went into the 2nd round at Leicester keen to improve and show that they can take on and beat the best. One person in particular did just that is Alex Welburn who races the Junior category.
Alex blasted off from the gun and got himself well positioned in the lead group just as the field approached the difficult sand section. Riding smooth he hit the front over the first climb and after a couple of looks over the shoulder to check on his closet opponents he pressed on. For half a lap he had company with 1st and 2nd placed riders from Round 1 but the elastic soon snapped and Alex soloed to his and the teams first National Victory. Speaking after Alex said " What a ride, i couldn't believe it. I had to compose myself with a couple of laps to go so i didn't make any mistakes. The bike rode amazing, light and fast out of the corners. I really like the USE kit as-well, the bars are that touch bigger which gives you a great grip and i particularly love the seat post. Jumping on and off the bike the post takes a lot of stick but with the Sumo head you know it's going to keep the seat exactly where it's supposed to be" Alex now take the leader yellow jersey into the next round.
Alex's ride was followed up by Ian Wright taking 3rd in the Vets 50 category despite a heavy fall and Matt Barrett and Lee Westward finishing well inside the top 20 in an extremely fast senior race.
The guys now part company for a week to ride in the inter-country CX championships before taking on all at the next round of the National series down in Southampton in two weeks time.
