UK Royal Navy Sports Awards Sean Childs was named as the Sportsman of the Year for 2009 in recognition of continued success in Cycling Time Trials. The Chief Petty Officer Physical Trainer from Brecon decided to concentrate his energies on cycling in 2004. He has been unbeaten by a Navy cyclist in a time trial for the past seven years and regular scores wins at all distances from 10 miles to 12 hours.
Last year he was part of a three man team from the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Cycling Association (RNRMCA) who became the UK National 24 hour time trial team champions. In their first appearance at the event, Sean and his fellow cyclists achieved a combined total of 1,386 miles, the best combined distance for nearly 18 years. The 39 year-old clocked up a total of 492.41 miles in the race, setting a new Combined Service record and maintaining an average speed of 20 miles per hour throughout. He narrowly missed out on the individual honours by just over 4 miles.
Sean is seen here being presented with the NATO Cup as the Royal Navy Sportsman of the Year by Vice Admiral Sir Allan Massey on board Lord Nelson's Flagship, HMS Victory in Portsmouth.
Sean and the rest of the UK Navy team use USE TULA aero bars and Exposure Lights.
